Our CEO

Dr. Thomas Royer is chief executive officer and president of the CHRISTUS Health system. Dr. Royer leads day-to-day operations for CHRISTUS Health and lends extensive expertise in developing physician partnerships and community health programs within CHRISTUS.

In his nearly seven years with the organization, Dr. Royer has led CHRISTUS Health through a remarkable period of growth, making it one of the ten largest Catholic health systems in the country today. In 2006 and 2007, he was named the 7th Most Powerful Physician Executive in Healthcare by Modern Physician Magazine.

Prior to joining CHRISTUS, Dr. Royer served as chairman of the board of governors for the Henry Ford Medical Group and senior vice president of Medical Affairs for the Henry Ford Health System. One of the nation’s leading comprehensive systems, the Henry Ford Health System employs more than 20,000 with revenue of $2.6 billion. In addition to leading major operations, Dr. Royer was instrumental in developing physician partnerships, community health programs and services, and introducing alternative and complementary medicine into the Henry Ford Health System.

In addition to his experience with Henry Ford, Dr. Royer also served for two years at Johns Hopkins Medical Services Corporation and Wyman Park Medical Associates in Baltimore in a variety of positions, including CEO, president and chief operating officer, as well as vice president of clinical operations. He also spent 18 years with the Geisinger Medical Center and Clinic in Danville, Pa., holding posts as senior vice president and medical director, after founding the center’s department of emergency medicine, emergency medicine residency program and the Susquehanna Poison Control Program.

In August 2005, Dr. Royer was invited to represent CHRISTUS Health as one of 350 delegates at the fifth Forbes Global CEO Conference held in Sydney, Australia. As the only physician and CEO of a non-profit, multi-geographic health care system, Dr. Royer was asked to participate in a workshop to discuss the complex issues faced in the health care industry and the leadership characteristics required to facilitate significant change in measurable benchmark goals. This is the second Forbes conference Dr. Royer has been invited to attend.

Dr. Royer has been published in numerous medical and trade publications including the Health Forum Journal, the Medical Group Management Association Journal, the American College of Physician Executives, as well as Deloitte & Touche and Crossroads Magazine, among others.
