CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini introduces advanced lung cancer diagnostic procedure

Aug. 1 is World Lung Cancer Day

St. Frances Cabrini Health System marked World Lung Cancer Day today by announcing a new minimally invasive procedure designed to support earlier detection of lung cancer in patients.

The hospital has implemented the Ion Robotic Navigational Bronchoscopy System allowing physicians to perform highly accurate lung biopsies with minimal risk. This robotic-assisted tool enables access to hard-to-reach areas of the lung, helping to detect cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages.

“Too often, lung cancer is discovered after it has already spread,” said Dr. Lorenzo Leys, pulmonologist at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Health System. “This technology changes that. It gives us the ability to intervene earlier and offer our patients a safer, more precise diagnostic option.”

During the procedure, a catheter is inserted through the patient's mouth and airway to reach the lungs, a method that reduces complications and increases accuracy. The hospital performed its first Ion-assisted biopsy this week, and Dr. Ley’s team will continue working closely with patients to determine the next appropriate steps for each one.

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends annual low-dose CT scans for adults ages 50 to 80 who currently smoke or quit within the last 15 years and have a 20-pack-per-year smoking history. These scans will identify abnormal cells before symptoms appear, offering more treatment options.

Common signs of lung cancer include:

  • Coughing up blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest discomfort
  • Hoarseness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent respiratory infections such as bronchitis or pneumonia

“Our mission is to bring comprehensive medical care to our community,” said Monte Wilson, chief executive officer at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Health System. “Now patients in Alexandria and surrounding areas can have access to advanced lung care close to home without the need to travel.”
