Healthy aging starts here: CHRISTUS Health encourages small steps for a bigger impact

Aging does not have to mean slowing down. During Healthy Aging Month in September, CHRISTUS Health is urging adults 45 and older to take charge of their health by making simple, proactive changes that boost physical, mental and social well-being.
“Healthy aging is about staying active, engaged and informed,” said Stephanie McCorkle, nurse practitioner at CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic in Texarkana. “Whether it’s managing chronic conditions, staying socially connected or prioritizing mental health, small changes can make a big difference.”
Adults who take proactive steps toward healthy aging live longer and feel better. Studies show walking just a few days a week can lower the risk of death by up to 16%, while each additional 1,000 steps per day cuts overall mortality by 15%.
Older adults who stay active and socially connected are also more likely to report excellent mental health. Nearly 80% of those who exercise weekly rate their mental health as very good or excellent, compared to lower rates among less active peers.
Tips for healthy aging:
- Stay active – aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily.
- Eat well – focus on whole foods, lean proteins and plenty of fruits and vegetables.
- Socialize – maintain relationships with friends, family and community groups.
- Check-ups – get regular health screenings to catch issues early.
- Prioritize mental health – stay mentally stimulated by reading a book or take the time to learn new skills and hobbies.
“It’s never too late to start making healthier choices,” McCorkle said. "Your future self will thank you.”
