Nursing Care Quality Measures -
Percent of Short-Stay Residents Who Were Assessed and Given Pneumococcal Vaccination

This percentage addresses the ratio of short-stay residents (those recently admitted to the Nursing Care Center following a hospital stay) in the facility who were given a pneumococcal vaccination. Higher percentages are better.

Why is this important?

The pneumococcal vaccination may help prevent or lower the risk of becoming seriously ill from pneumonia caused by bacteria, and may also help prevent future infections. The vaccination is important to have, as Pneumococcal disease kills more people in the United States each year than all other vaccine-preventable diseases combined.

Residents should be asked if they have been vaccinated for pneumonia, and if not, should be given the pneumococcal vaccination unless there is a medical reason why they should not receive it.

The data included on CHRISTUS Health’s nursing care centers as well as U.S. and state averages for this measure were provided by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
