At CHRISTUS Health, we understand that deciding on a nursing care center for you or your loved one is often a difficult and emotional experience. Therefore, we believe that prospective residents and their families should have the best information possible to make this decision.

It may be helpful to examine the quality of care offered at the nursing care center. We believe that you can get a brief, overall snapshot of this from the quality data listed below. It comes from resident assessment data that nursing homes routinely collect on all residents at specified intervals during their stay. The information collected pertains to the residents' physical and clinical conditions and abilities as well as preferences and life care wishes.

However, these quality measures are only one component to consider when deciding on a nursing care center. In addition to the quality measures, you should consider:

Whether or not the nursing home meets your specific needs (like an Alzheimer's unit, for example);
Other information available on the center, including facility characteristics and inspection results;
Calling your State Survey Agency or Long-Term Care Ombudsman for additional information (see Nursing Care Center Resources) and
Visiting nursing homes in order to meet the care team (like nurses, certified nursing assistants, and therapists), watch the care that is given, and see firsthand the quality of living conditions and the general nursing home environment.

It is important to visit nursing care centers before making a final choice. Some may have higher percentages on these measures because of the types of residents they serve.
