Pneumonia Care Quality Measures -
Patients who had a Blood Culture Performed

Pneumonia is a serious infection of the lungs. These measures apply to what is called "community acquired pneumonia," which occurs prior to hospital admission in patients 18 years old or older. These measures provide a guideline for the care of patients who have community acquired pneumonia as well as the protocols to prevent future lung problems.

Percent of Patients who had a Blood Culture Performed Prior to Receiving their First Antibiotic in the Hospital

This percentage represents the ratio of pneumonia patients whose blood culture was collected before the hospital administered the first dose of antibiotic. Blood cultures can help determine what kind of medicine will work best to treat each patient’s pneumonia if they are collected before antibiotics are given.

The data used to compute the indicator percentage for the system overall and each individual facility was collected from January 2009 to March 2009.
