Pneumonia Care Quality Measures -
Patients Given Oxygenation Assessment
Pneumonia is a serious infection of the lungs. These measures apply to what is called "community acquired pneumonia," which occurs prior to hospital admission in patients 18 years old or older. These measures provide a guideline for the care of patients who have community acquired pneumonia as well as the protocols to prevent future lung problems.

Patients Given Oxygenation Assessment
This percentage represents the ratio of pneumonia patients who were assessed for oxygenation (level of oxygen in the blood) within 24 hours prior to or after hospital arrival. Early assessment helps with earlier detection of an insufficient oxygen level in the blood, and having enough oxygen in your blood is important to your health. In fact, giving supplemental oxygen has been shown to decrease death rates among patients with pneumonia.
The data used to compute the indicator percentage for the system overall and each individual facility was collected from January 2009 to March 2009.
