Pneumonia Care Quality Measures -
Percent of non-ICU patients given the
recommended antibiotic
Pneumonia is a serious infection of the lungs. These measures apply to what is called "community acquired pneumonia," which occurs prior to hospital admission in patients 18 years old or older. These measures provide a guideline for the care of patients who have community acquired pneumonia as well as the protocols to prevent future lung problems.

Percent of non-ICU patients given the
recommended antibiotic
Number of pneumonia patients, including those both inside and outside the ICU, per 100, who received an antibiotic consistent with current guideline recommendations during the first 24 hours of their hospitalization. Antibiotics are medicines that treat infection, and each one is different. Hospital physicians should choose the antibiotics that best treat the infection type for each pneumonia patient.
The data used to compute the indicator percentage for the system overall and each individual facility was collected from January 2009 to March 2009.
