Pneumonia Care Quality Measures -
Patients Given Smoking Cessation Advice

Pneumonia is a serious infection of the lungs. These measures apply to what is called "community acquired pneumonia," which occurs prior to hospital admission in patients 18 years old or older. These measures provide a guideline for the care of patients who have community acquired pneumonia as well as the protocols to prevent future lung problems.

Percent of Patients Given Smoking Cessation Advice

This percentage represents the ratio of pneumonia patients who smoke who received counseling on how and why to stop smoking while in the hospital. Quitting may help prevent patients from contracting pneumonia again.

The data used to compute the indicator percentage for the system overall and each individual facility was collected from January 2009 to March 2009.
