Pneumonia Care Quality Measures -
Patients Given Pneumococcal Vaccination

Pneumonia is a serious infection of the lungs. These measures apply to what is called "community acquired pneumonia," which occurs prior to hospital admission in patients 18 years old or older. These measures provide a guideline for the care of patients who have community acquired pneumonia as well as the protocols to prevent future lung problems.

Percent of Patients Given Pneumococcal Vaccination

This percentage represents the ratio of pneumonia patients aged 65 and older who were screened to determine if they have had a pneumococcal vaccine and who received the vaccine prior to discharge, if appropriate. A pneumococcal vaccination for those 65 and older can help prevent future pneumonia infections, even for patients who have been hospitalized for pneumonia.

The data used to compute the indicator percentage for the system overall and each individual facility was collected from January 2009 to March 2009.
