National Dance Institute
Santa Fe, New Mexico
The National Dance Institute of New Mexico (NDI-NM) was "founded with the knowledge that the arts have a unique power to engage and motivate children." Since its opening in 1994, NDI-NM now reaches almost 10,000 children annually through in-school, after-school, summer and advanced training classes in communities across the state.
With help from the CHRISTUS Fund, NDI-NM used the evidence-based 'HIP (Health Initiative Plan) to be Fit' program to introduce 'Dancing to Health in Santa Fe' as one of its many program offerings.
This 30-week in-school program provides vigorous activity, health, and nutrition information to help prevent chronic diseases. The program is designed to help students demonstrate resilient based on four (4) key principles:
1. Work hard
2. Be healthy
3. Do your best
4. Never give up
In 2016, over 800 children and 40 teachers across 11 elementary schools participated in the program. Outcomes of this program include increased exercise, energy, and focus in the classroom.
It was a pleasure to work with the National Dance Institute of New Mexico! Kudos to them for their efforts to address childhood obesity and self-esteem issues facing our children today!
