Dr. Shields received her B.S. in Preprofessional Studies at the University of Notre Dame, and obtained her M.D. from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus. Following her Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, Dr. Shields completed her Fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. She is pursuing a Master of Science Degree in Clinical Investigations and Translational Research at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. She is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
Dr. Shields currently serves as Associate Professor and Chief of Clinical Research for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Baylor College of Medicine at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. She served 15 years in the U.S. Air Force, and then pursued an academic career at the University of Minnesota before coming to The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. She is a Board Examiner for the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and in 2016 ranked among the top 10% of all Reviewers for the Obstetrics & Gynecology Journal. She has a special interest in women with preterm labor and cervical insufficiency, and is specialized in surgical procedures to assist with mid-pregnancy cervical shortening and dilatation (cerclage).
