CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Partner Physician Now Offers Enhanced 3D Visualization and Mapping System to Guide Surgeons During Sinus Surgery February 06, 2020

Longview, Texas – Brian Langford, M.D., a member of CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System’s physician partners at ENT Associates of East Texas, is among the first in the region to offer the StealthStation™ ENT, a surgical navigation system designed for ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons to visualize sinuses in 3D images when treating chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), which affects more than 30 million Americans.

CRS, commonly referred to as a chronic sinus infection, can cause difficulty breathing through the nose, reduced sense of smell and taste, swelling around the eyes and face and facial pain or tenderness lasting for more than 12 weeks.

“While some people are able to find relief through over-the-counter or prescription medications, some patients just don’t respond to the prescribed drug therapies and require sinus surgery to remove the source of the blockage and infection,” said Monica Gabriel, RN, Clinical Director of Pre-Admission Testing for Main OR and Surgery Center, CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System. “Unfortunately, approximately one out of five traditional sinus surgeries fail to provide desirable outcomes and require subsequent procedures in order to provide CRS patients with relief. In partnership with ENT Associates of East Texas and Dr. Langford, we can get them the help they need.”

Image-guided, or navigated, functional endoscopic sinus surgeries (FESS), such as with the StealthStation™ ENT, are designed for surgeons to map sinuses in 3D images. Image-guided systems provide additional information about sinus anatomy during procedures.

“Each person has a unique sinus anatomy, so the need for surgical navigation is particularly important during sinus surgery,” said Dr. Langford. “Sinus problems are a real concern among patients in East Texas, and we see people struggling with CRS every day. We are proud to be among the first practices in Longview and East Texas to offer the StealthStation™ ENT to our patients to address their CRS.”
