CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic Primary Care Offering Expanded Concussion Diagnosis/Treatment Option in Longview October 30, 2018

Longview, TX - Regardless of their chosen activity, from football to volleyball, athletes participating in sports may be at increased risk of concussion. CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic Primary Care is looking to serve the evolving needs of Northeast Texas patients, and Douglas Barron, DO, is available to provide the very latest in concussion treatment to Longview and the surrounding area thanks to his status as an ImPACT Certified Concussion Specialist.

ImPACT is a concussion assessment tool that measures visual and verbal memory, reaction time and processing speed. It is composed of two components: baseline testing and post-injury testing which are used in conjunction to determine if a patient can safely return to activity.

“CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic is here to serve the patients of Longview and this area, and part of that is addressing the day-to-day health concerns of our athletes outside the realm of Orthopedics or Sports Medicine,” said Shanna Konvalin, Administrative Director of Operations, CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic in Longview. “In primary care we can make a real impact in our community’s day-to-day lives, and Dr. Barron going through the tremendous effort and education necessary to achieve this certification is a testament to our commitment to our patients.”

ImPACT or (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is the first, most-widely used, scientifically-validated computerized neurocognitive evaluation system available. ImPACT begins with a 20-minute baseline test that is administered pre-season/game. If a concussion is suspected later, another post-injury test is administered by trained clinicians to assess the possible after-effects. The program evaluates multiple aspects of brain function including memory, processing speed, reaction time and post-concussive symptoms, assisting doctors in making return-to-play decisions and potentially reducing the possibility of long-term neurological effects. ImPACT is used by Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer and other national and international sports organizations.

“In this area, sports play a huge role in our lives – both for the youth and among adults,” said Dr. Barron. “From high school soccer players to adults playing basketball on the weekends, concussion can be a real concern. Learning to properly assess and treat concussion is hugely important to ensuring the safe return to activity for athletes of all ages and skill levels. Honestly, people just love to play – and by helping them to get healthy, we can help them get back into the game.”

Dr. Barron joined CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic after earning his undergraduate and master’s degrees in biology and Biomedical Sciences, respectively, before completing his medical degree at Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in Family Medicine at North Mississippi Medical Center and a fellowship in Sports Medicine at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
