CHRISTUS Health Names New Chief Operating Officer
Eugene “Gene” A. Woods will be joining CHRISTUS Health as the health care system’s new executive vice president and chief operating officer no later than June 1, 2011. He replaces Ernie Sadau, who assumed the role of president and chief executive officer for CHRISTUS Health on March 1, 2011.
Woods, 46, joins CHRISTUS with almost 25 years of experience in hospital and health system administration. He has served as chief executive officer of Saint Joseph Health System (SJHS) since 2007, one of the largest wholly‐owned, market‐based organizations within Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI), the nation’s second‐largest Catholic health care system. SJHS is a 1,012‐bed system with seven hospitals, a women's facility and an ambulatory care center, and over 5,000 employees and 1,300 physicians. He was appointed senior vice president of divisional operations for CHI in 2008, and first joined the organization in 2005 as chief executive officer of Saint Joseph HealthCare, which was comprised of four of the hospitals that are now part of SJHS. Prior to joining CHI, he was the chief operating officer at the Washington Hospital Center, a 926‐bed teaching hospital located in the nation’s capitol, one of the busiest hospitals in the mid‐Atlantic region.
Woods brings to CHRISTUS a clear understanding of—and proven successful experience in—hospital, physician group and non-acute care operations within a large system, as well as a depth of understanding of non-profit, faith-based health care. He completed his education at The Pennsylvania State University, receiving his bachelor’s degree in Health Planning and Administration, master’s degree in Business Administration, and master’s degree in Health Administration from Penn State. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
As CHRISTUS’ new executive vice president and chief operating officer, Woods will provide oversight, guidance, consulting and direction to CHRISTUS leaders with responsibility for operations within the system. Upon joining CHRISTUS, Woods will begin working with the CEOs in CHRISTUS Health’s regions in the U.S. and Mexico to assume immediate executive oversight for operations, including CHRISTUS’ non-acute and international operations.
