CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – New Braunfels sets the pace for treating heart attack victims March 10, 2017

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – New Braunfels (CSRH-NB) leads the South Texas area when it comes to the emergency treatment of patients, providing faster care for emergency department patients and heart attack victims. A recent study shows CSRH-NB outpaces Methodist Hospital, Northeast Baptist, and North Central Baptist in San Antonio with best door-to-balloon times.

“All heart attack patients are considered a priority by our ER staff and emergency responders,” said Michele Valerio, CSRH-NB Director of Cardiovascular Services. “When someone has a heart attack and calls an ambulance, they start receiving care before they even get to our Hospital. EMS calls ahead and we notify our cath lab team to get ready.”

Door-to-balloon time refers to providing emergency procedures to re-establish blood flow to blocked arteries when needed. For 2016, CSRH—NB had a door-to-balloon mean time of 46.5 minutes, according to the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council (STRAC), which is designated by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to develop, implement, and maintain the regional trauma and emergency healthcare system for 22 counties, including Comal and Bexar counties. STRAC says the Hospital also had the shortest suburban travel time to an ED after a 911 call is placed.

“Providing the cath lab services locally allows our New Braunfels community and surrounding rural areas to receive care sooner and prevent the necessity of transferring to San Antonio, where traffic can cause a major delay in care,” added CSRH-NB’s Casey Bridge, RN-BSN, CCCC. “We work collaboratively with our EMS agents in Canyon Lake and New Braunfels, who are committed to carrying medications specifically recommended for treating heart attacks on their ambulances. This provides quick intervention on our patients having heart attacks in order to preserve heart function.”

“We believe our cardiac response team and our emergency department staff are some of the best in Texas,” said Jim Wesson, FACHE, President and Administrator of CSRH-NB. “The competency and care they provide saves time, which in turn saves lives. CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – New Braunfels offers premiere cardiac services for Seguin, San Marcos, Canyon Lake, Bulverde, and surrounding communities.”
