A First in San Antonio: New, high-tech non-surgical weight loss procedure March 21, 2016

Bariatric surgeon Dr. John Pilcher has performed the first-of-its-kind, non-surgical ReShape® Integrated Dual Balloon System procedure at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Alamo Heights (CSRH – AH), giving area residents who may be struggling with their weight loss goals another means to regaining their health, safely and quickly.

The procedure was recently approved by the FDA, and is designed as an option for adults who haven’t succeeded at diet and exercise alone, and do not want or do not qualify for bariatric surgery.

In the ReShape procedure, dual balloons are inserted endoscopically into the stomach and filled with saline, where they remain for six months to help control appetite and portion sizes. The balloons do not alter the human anatomy in any way.

“For years a significant gap has existed in treatment options for obesity with limited, effective therapies available,” said Dr. John Pilcher, MD, FACS, FASMBS. “We often see patients who are clinically obese and in desperate need of medical intervention to help them lose weight, when diet and exercise alone have failed and surgery is not an option. ReShape provides this group of ‘in-between’ patients with access to a non-surgical, reversible option to encourage new habits and lasting results.”

Research shows that patients who use the ReShape® Integrated Dual Balloon System lose twice the amount of weight of just diet and exercise alone.

To help maintain optimal weight and a healthy lifestyle, CSRH – AH patients continue to get support and counseling after the balloons are removed, including frequent in-office coaching sessions.

“I am excited our physicians and CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Alamo Heights offer the most-advanced weight-loss care available for our patients,” said Chris Bowe, FACHE, President and Administrator, CSRH – AH. “It’s just another example of our commitment to becoming a destination for those seeking to lose weight and regain their health, as they work with a team of compassionate caregivers.”
