The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is proud to be named a Magnet designated facility, recognizing the gold standard for nursing excellence.

The prestigious three-year designation is awarded by the American Nurses' Credentialing Center (ANCC), an affiliate of the American Nurses Association.

Magnet designation recognizes facilities that meet a series of high-quality standards, designed to measure the strength and quality of their nursing programs. The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is the only freestanding children’s hospital in South Texas to earn the designation.

“We are honored to be recognized among the nation’s top hospitals,” said Charles Hankins, President and Chief Medical Officer of The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. “This is a testament to the outstanding nurses, doctors and Associates who care for our patients each and every day.”

Magnet hospitals feature nursing programs which deliver excellent patient outcomes; have a high level of job satisfaction; and feature low turnover rates and appropriate grievance resolution.

“The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is an environment where nurses can grow professionally and spiritually,” said Rhonda Thompson, Chief Nursing Officer of The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. “This level of excellence is passed to our patients who receive compassionate and expert nursing care.”

To achieve Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demands widespread participation from leadership and staff. This process includes electronic applications, written patient care documentation, on-site visits, and a review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition.

Once accepted for application, a hospital spends the 24-to-36-month application process gathering and producing the necessary submission documents, which the ANCC only accepts four times a year.

According to the ANCC, many hospitals and medical organizations are unable to meet the criteria necessary to apply for Magnet recognition, making it one of the most difficult statuses to achieve.

“We are honored to be the only freestanding children’s hospital in the region to achieve Magnet status,” said Cris Daskevich, CEO of The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. “This designation recognizes the highest standards of excellence.”
