Our Approach

The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio provides emergency care to newborn babies and kids all the way up to age 17. We have the city’s only freestanding emergency centers dedicated to children located in Stone Oak and Westover Hills along with the H-E-B Emergency Department at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, located in the heart of San Antonio. Our specially trained doctors, nurses, technicians, and child life specialists only take care of children. They have all the resources and equipment needed to provide children with the type of diagnosis, testing, and treatment they need.

If your child needs additional outpatient services based on their ER visit, we have a comprehensive multidisciplinary team of pediatric subspecialists who are part of the Baylor College of Medicine. We have doctors available in a wide variety of subspecialty areas who are only focused on the health and well-being of children. From psychology to orthopedics and ear, nose and throat, our emergency physicians will provide a referral to an experienced pediatric subspecialist who is part of The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

At our main hospital location, we have a Level III pediatric trauma designation meaning our team has demonstrated an ability to provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care, and stabilization of injured children of all ages and emergency operations with highly skilled pediatric surgeons and anesthesiologists.

Choosing the ER or Urgent Care Center

Our emergency department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is staffed with a devoted team of pediatric nurses, physicians, trauma specialists, child life, and other support staff specially trained in the care of children in an emergency. They all share one common goal – making sure your child receives the best possible care within a safe and comfortable environment.

It is sometimes difficult for parents to determine whether they should take their child to the ER or to an Urgent Care center. The following list explains which injuries or conditions are best suited to each particular venue.
