Our Approach

When the unexpected fetal anomaly occurs, the Fetal Care Center at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio connects pediatric specialists to pregnant women and their families, regardless of where they plan to deliver their baby. Through outpatient consultation or inpatient care, this multidisciplinary approach allows for coordinated management of both mother and baby, providing an enhanced experience in which parents are better informed and prepared. By optimizing communication and sharing expertise among obstetric providers and pediatric subspecialists, health care professionals can develop individual management plans prior to delivery that will ultimately direct the care of a newborn.

Our Fetal Care Center is committed to patient- and family-centered care. When a physician refers an expectant mother to our Fetal Care Center, she will receive an individualized consultation tailored specifically for her needs.

Our Fetal Care Coordinator, a registered nurse, facilitates each consultation, connecting the mother and her support team to services at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. Throughout the consultation, our coordinator remains available to the mother and her family, accompanying her every step of the way.
Most fetal care consultations include the following services and additional services can be included as needed:

  • Consultation with pediatric subspecialists
  • Diagnostic imaging, if requested
  • Consultation with a neonatologist
  • Tour Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
  • Preregistration in Labor and Delivery (if delivering at The Children’s Hospital)
  • Consultation with an obstetric hospitalist (if delivering at The Children’s Hospital)
  • Parking validated

Upon completion of the fetal care consultation, the referring physician will receive a letter summarizing the discussion and management plan for the patient. The letter will include detailed information from each team member, outlining recommendations for both maternal, fetal, and newborn care. Our Fetal Care Coordinator will ensure that any recommended follow-up visits are coordinated and communicated to an expectant mom and her obstetrician.
