CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - New Braunfels Receives Prestigious International Award October 13, 2016

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - New Braunfels (CSRH – NB) has received prestigious international recognition as a Baby-Friendly Designated birth facility, becoming the first hospital to be honored with this award in central and south Texas.

“We are so excited with this award, because our nurses and Associates work hard to provide the best environment for all mothers and babies,” said Kathy Parkes, MSN-Ed, BSPsy, RN, IBCLC, RLC, FILCA, CHC, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, CSRH – NB. “Babies are put in safe, skin-to-skin contact with their mothers immediately following all healthy births and are not routinely separated from their mothers during their hospital stay; all of which improves bonding and attachment for our families.”

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Based on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, this prestigious international award recognizes birth facilities that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence, and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies.

“We are honored to be counted among the few health care facilities within Texas who make mothers and newborns such a priority,” said Jim Wesson, FACHE, President and Administrator, CSRH – NB. “Expectant mothers in New Braunfels and surrounding communities should know they will receive truly compassionate and comprehensive care closer to home at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – New Braunfels.”

“We are proud the international community has recognized the steps we take in our Birthing Center to provide evidence-based care and breastfeeding education to those families who choose it,” added Parkes.

There are more than 20,000 designated Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers worldwide. Currently there are 375 active Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers in the United States, and only 18 in Texas. Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. is the U.S. authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. The “Baby-Friendly” designation is given after a rigorous on-site survey is completed. The award is maintained by continuing to practice the Ten Steps as demonstrated by quality processes.
