Our Approach

Central Texas Medical Center earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval® for Total Hip Replacements in 2019 and Total Knee Replacements in 2018. To achieve Center of Excellence status, CTMC underwent a rigorous onsite review and Joint Commission experts evaluated the hospital's compliance with national safety standards, as well as clinical practice guidelines and performance measures.

What is Joint Replacement?

Over time, cartilage that cushions bones can wear away, causing pain in the knee or hip joints and making simple pleasures like walking and shopping unbearable. Joint replacement is a surgical procedure that replaces the worn out surfaces of the hip or knee with man-made components. The goal is to reduce or eliminate pain, allow easier movement and get you back to your normal lifestyle.

Are You a Candidate?

When arthritic hip or knee pain severely limits daily activities, we recommend a careful examination and diagnosis of your particular joint problem. Then, joint pain is treated with conservative measures such as exercise, physical therapy and medications. Only if those prove ineffective is joint replacement surgery considered. There may come a time when your knee or hip pain reduces the quality of your life. Everyday activities, such as walking, shopping or housework can become difficult or unbearable. Taking part in favorite hobbies such as golf or bowling may be a thing of the past because conservative measures like diet, exercise and medications no longer provide pain relief. If this describes your situation, it may be time to consider joint replacement.

Education

We believe the key to better outcomes is a commitment to provide you with a thorough understanding and knowledge of what to expect during your surgical experience. Knowing what to expect each step of the way goes a long way to reducing stress and anxiety and preparing you for the smoothest recovery possible. Prior to surgery, you will attend a pre-operative class. Your family can also attend to understand your care. You will receive a patient guidebook that includes pre-operative and post-operative care, what to expect from surgery and managing your home care. We want you to feel confident about the process every step of the way.
