What sets the CHRISTUS Transplant Institute apart, is that when a person comes through the doors, we will minister to them. By focusing on more than just transplants, the CHRISTUS Transplant Institute is able to treat entire families of both donors and recipients.
Faith Zaho, 5, Liver Transplant
Faith was our second pediatric liver transplant recipient. She was born with sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver disease caused by inflammation of the bile ducts. Now she is back to her favorite activities: playing with her sisters, reading books, painting, and enjoying school.
Gloria Garza, 59, Kidney Transplant
Gloria Garza had already suffered serious complications of type 2 diabetes when progressive kidney failure led her nephrologist to refer her to CHRISTUS Transplant Institute for transplant evaluation.
Garza was evaluated and listed for transplant in 2004. Laura, her 32 year-old daughter, stepped up to be considered for live donation. The live donor kidney transplant was performed in June 2010 and both patient and donor are doing well. "I was scared, but felt I was in good hands at CHRISTUS Transplant Institute," Garza explained. "The doctors and nurses that cared for me were superior."
Maria Martinez, 56, Kidney Transplant
Maria Martinez resides in Laredo, Texas, three hours from San Antonio. Referred by her local nephologist, she was able to discuss transplant as an alternative to her current dialysis treatment for kidney failure in CHRISTUS Transplant Institute's Laredo outreach clinic. "I had a good experience at CHRISTUS Transplant Institute," Martinez said. "The transplant team was able to educate me about a possible transplant in my hometown. The team really works with you to get you through something like this."
Sister Michele O'Brien, Liver Transplant
Fifteen years ago, liver disease almost killed me. Thankfully, a gracious father and daughter gave me their mom's liver and my life back. During my recovery, I decided to dedicate my life to saving others' lives by advocating for organ donation. Coincidentally, about the same time, the CHRISTUS Transplant Institute was formed; being a Sister, I found the perfect outlet for my energy.
