What sets the CHRISTUS Transplant Institute apart, is that when a person comes through the doors, we will minister to them. By focusing on more than just transplants, the CHRISTUS Transplant Institute is able to treat entire families of both donors and recipients.
Bob Golden, Kidney Transplant
On Christmas day 2015, Bob Golden received one of the greatest gifts of his life. It was a document saying he was a match! The gift came from his best friend, Beth Willstrop. Bob and Beth became friends after meeting on a dating website. And although they didn't make a love connection, they did make a life connection. The compassionate care of the CHRISTUS Team solidified Beth's decision. "The warmth at CHRISTUS immediately told us that this was the match for us," Willstrop said. The surgery took place 6 months after Christmas. "When I woke up from surgery, it's like someone turned on a switch. I was ready to run a marathon," Golden said.
Gloria Garza - Kidney Transplant
Gloria Garza had already suffered serious complications of type 2 diabetes when progressive kidney failure led her nephrologist to refer her to CHRISTUS Transplant Institute for transplant evaluation.
Garza was evaluated and listed for transplant in 2004. Laura, her 32 year-old daughter, stepped up to be considered for live donation. The live donor kidney transplant was performed in June 2010 and both patient and donor are doing well. "I was scared, but felt I was in good hands at CHRISTUS Transplant Institute," Garza explained. "The doctors and nurses that cared for me were superior."
Maria Martinez - Kidney Transplant
Maria Martinez resides in Laredo, Texas, three hours from San Antonio. Referred by her local nephologist, she was able to discuss transplant as an alternative to her current dialysis treatment for kidney failure in CHRISTUS Transplant Institute's Laredo outreach clinic. "I had a good experience at CHRISTUS Transplant Institute," Martinez said. "The transplant team was able to educate me about a possible transplant in my hometown. The team really works with you to get you through something like this."
