CHRISTUS Health Shreveport-Bossier announced plans to construct and operate a new facility in north Bossier, expanding access to high-quality health care in Northwest Louisiana. Rather than building a traditional hospital in Bossier, the faith-based health system recognized an opportunity to bring a new model of healthcare to the region in the form of a “micro-hospital.”
“CHRISTUS Bossier Emergency Center is the first and only of its kind in the region, and we are excited and honored to bring this innovative model of care to the area,” said Isaac Palmer, CHRISTUS Health Shreveport-Bossier Chief Executive Officer. “CHRISTUS is responding to the Bossier medical community and residents for more access to health care while continuing our mission of extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.”
In 2013 the health system announced an expansion of services and facilities to the Highland campus, a commitment to provide more access points for primary care and outpatient services, as well as further expansion into Bossier.
“CHRISTUS made a commitment to our community in 2013 to increase accessible healthcare to Shreveport and Bossier City,” said Stephen Wright, Senior Vice President Group Operations CHRISTUS Health. “We brought cancer care to north Bossier in 2014 and primary care to south Bossier in 2015. Today marks an important milestone as we continue to fulfill the commitment made in 2013 to increase health care access in north Louisiana.”
CHRISTUS Bossier Emergency Center will be located on Viking Drive, and will include an emergency department, six short-stay inpatient beds, advanced imaging and diagnostic laboratory services. Outpatient imaging and lab services will also be offered at the center.
CHRISTUS Bossier Emergency Center is unlike any hospital emergency department or urgent care center in the area. This innovative model is more like a hybrid emergency room with inpatient, short stay beds versus a traditional hospital model the community has come to know. CHRISTUS Bossier Emergency Center provides 24/7 access to board-certified emergency physicians and can accommodate patients with emergent illnesses, including heart attack, stroke, and minor trauma, as well as acute abdominal pain, bladder infections, chest pain, dehydration, pneumonia, seizures, lacerations, sprained and broken bones. The short-stay inpatient beds provide brief hospitalization for patients who require further monitoring, treatment, diagnostic testing, antibiotic therapy or post-operative care and can be discharged as soon as clinical conditions are resolved. Patients may be admitted through the emergency room or directly from the physician’s office. The location also brings an additional point for outpatient lab services and radiology testing to include X-ray, MRI, CT, 3D digital mammography and ultrasound.
"As we look to the future and monitor the changing needs of our community and the ongoing evolution of health care, we will continue to respond with innovative solutions to ensure high-quality, low-cost health care for our community," said Palmer.
Earlier this year, CHRISTUS Health Shreveport-Bossier announced an expansion to the Bossier Healthplex facility. The 10,000 square foot expansion is expected to be completed by fall 2017 with Bossier Family Medicine occupying the majority of the extended space. The health system is proud to partner with Bossier Family Medicine to expand primary care access in north Louisiana. Bossier Family Medicine is a multi-provider group that is dedicated to providing high-value, high-quality at a low cost to area residents.
