LAKE CHARLES – The official healthcare provider of the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans is extending its expertise to Lake Charles. With support from Ochsner Sports Medicine Institute (OSMI), Ochsner CHRISTUS Health has been named the Official Sports Medicine Partner of McNeese Athletics.
In addition to professional relationships with the NFL’s Saints and NBA’s Pelicans, Ochsner Health serves collegiate and prep teams throughout Louisiana with more than 80 athletic trainers (AT). At McNeese, Ochsner CHRISTUS Health will employ six full-time athletic trainers and four athletic training interns to support 400+ student-athletes. These ATs will become a member of each team they serve. They will travel with the team and provide services for practices and games, as deemed necessary.
Ochsner CHRISTUS Health will also provide ongoing COVID-19 support, along with COVID mitigation plans and resources in compliance with NCAA regulations. All student-athletes will receive rigorous preseason physical examinations and ImPACT Concussion Testing. This concussion testing provides a vital baseline comparison post-injury using the ImPACT testing software. As the partnership evolves, McNeese student-athletes will soon have access to Ochsner’s innovative sports mental health, nutrition and performance training resources.
“Our new partnership with Ochsner CHRISTUS Health is a game-changer,” said Heath Schroyer, Athletic Director, McNeese. “The Ochsner Sports Performance Center in Metairie is next level. We look forward to everything our partners can do to enhance the physical and physiological well-being of our hard-working athletes here in Lake Charles, which is the number one priority.”
The Ochsner Athletic Training Outreach Program is the largest, longest sustaining and fastest growing athletic training outreach program in Louisiana. Ochsner ATs are proficient in prevention, treatment and maintenance of any sport related injury or health condition.
“The goal of our athletic training partnership is to proactively keep athletes safe and prevent serious injury from occurring,” said Scott Saylor, System Manager, OSMI. “Working together with McNeese, we will execute return-to-play guidelines post-injury, as well as communicate return-to-classroom and return-to-play guidelines post-concussion.”
“I’m looking forward to this partnership with Ochsner Health,” said Hunter Martin, Assistant AD for Sports Medicine. “They have had a track record of implementing the latest and most up-to-date health protocols throughout the state of Louisiana and beyond. Having our Sports Medicine Department partner with them will allow my staff and I to have a great deal of resources for our student-athletes to have success on and off the playing field.”
“CHRISTUS Ochsner Health Southwestern Louisiana’s goal is to combine the strengths of both health systems to expand access to healthcare for residents of Southwest Louisiana. This is a perfect example of us realizing that goal,” said Jim Davidson, CHRISTUS Ochsner Health Southwestern Louisiana President and Chief Operating Officer. “We’re excited that Ochsner CHRISTUS Health Centers will be providing this service to McNeese athletes and look forward to identifying other areas we can come together in the future.”
