Cabrini Hospital’s Diabetes Education Program Merits ADA Recognition

CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital was recognized in early February by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for the quality of its diabetes self-management education program. Cabrini’s program is the only program in Central Louisiana to earn this distinction.

The ADA Education Recognition effort is a voluntary process which assures that approved education programs have met the national standards for diabetes self-management education programs. In a news release from the ADA, the association states that programs that receive recognition status, “have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide state-of-the-art information about diabetes management for participants.”

Marie Simpson, R.N., is Cabrini’s program director, and Jessica Hayes, RD, is the program’s dedicated nutritionist.

The CHRISTUS Cabrini Diabetes Management Center provides individual and group education that teaches the knowledge and skills needed to manage diabetes on a daily basis. Understanding the relationship between food, activity, medication, emotional and physical status, and blood glucose levels empowers individuals with diabetes to respond appropriately to achieve and maintain optimal glucose control. Unnecessary hospital admissions and some of the acute and chronic complications of diabetes may be prevented through self-management education such that provided by Cabrini’s program.
