CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital - Atlanta Donates Lifesaving Technology to Linden Fire Department
July 31, 2019
Atlanta, Texas – CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital - Atlanta demonstrated their ongoing commitment to community health with the presentation of an automated external defibrillator (AED) to the Linden Volunteer Fire Department (LVFD) on June 5, 2019. This lifesaving technology assists the LVFD in their efforts as first responders across south-central Cass County.
An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias and can deliver electric shock if needed. Prior to awarding the AED, CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital - Atlanta reached out Cass County area responders to determine where the AED would be most effective.
“The LVFD are often the first persons on the scene of an emergency and must respond to such crises as a cardiac arrest (heart attack),” said Micah Johnson, MSN, BSN, RN, Administrator/Chief Nursing Officer for the hospital. “Early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and placement of the AED on a cardiac arrest victim can be crucial to survival. Being equipped with an AED can make the lifesaving difference in this community.”
The donation was made possible through funding from the Northeast Texas Regional Advisory Council.
“Onsite AEDs save precious treatment time and can improve survival odds because they can be used by our team before emergency medical service (EMS) personnel arrive,” said Robert Luzio, Fire Chief, LVFD. “Immediate CPR and use of an AED can double, or even triple, survival rates – so having this tool at our disposal will make an immediate difference as we respond to emergencies across this area.”
“The AED is a fantastic device for first responders because it is effective, efficient and you do not have to be a medical professional or certified to use it,” explained Nicole Fant, MSN, RN, SCRN, RN Program Manager – Trauma/Stroke/Chest Pain, CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital - Atlanta. “The AED can be a truly lifesaving tool, and we are proud to have a part in providing this to the brave first responders of the Linden Volunteer Fire Department.”
