CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System Adds Second MAKOplasty® System For Robotic Arm-Guided Knee and Hip Surgery Minimally invasive procedure provided for knee and hip replacement October 29, 2018

Orthopedic Surgeons

Texarkana, TX – CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System announced today that it has added a second MAKOplasty® system for use in partial knee, total knee, and hip replacements. Powered by the RIO® Robotic Arm, the interactive orthopedic system offers more precise and consistent results for knee and hip replacement.

CHRISTUS St. Michael is the only hospital in the Ark-La-Tex region to offer MAKOplasty® and first introduced the technology to Texarkana and the surrounding communities in 2011.

“MAKOplasty® patients may experience shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery and smaller incisions as compared to more traditional surgeries,” said Joseph Ramos, PT, MBA, Director of the CHRISTUS St. Michael Center for Joint Replacement. “In addition, many patients return to active lifestyles within weeks of the procedure.”

“Through its innovative use of technology, MAKOplasty® brings partial knee resurfacing, total knee replacement, and hip replacement to a new level of precision,” said Carol Giese, MSN, RN, CNOR, CSSM, Director of Surgical Services at CHRISTUS St. Michael.

This MAKOplasty® system provides the surgeon a pre-surgical plan that details the technique for bone preparation and customized implant positioning using a CT scan of the patient’s knee or hip. During the procedure, the system creates a three-dimensional live-action, virtual view of the patient’s bone surface and correlates the image to the pre-programmed surgical plan. As the surgeon uses the robotic arm, its tactile, acoustic and visual feedback limits the bone preparation to the diseased areas and provides for more optimal implant positioning and placement for each individual patient.

“Precision is key in planning and performing knee and hip replacement,” said Giese. “For a good outcome, you need to align and position the implants just right. Precision in surgery, and in the pre-operative planning process, is what RIO can deliver. Residents of the Texarkana region are fortunate to have talented orthopedic surgeons specially trained to perform the minimally invasive partial knee resurfacing, total knee replacement, and hip replacement procedures.”
