Educational Experience

Fellows work a total of 14 shifts per month in the Emergency Department at CHRISTUS St. Michael. During each shift, fellows work side by side with a faculty member who is the fellows mentor, teacher, preceptor, and guide. The educational environment during work in the emergency department is conducted in a spirit or partnership between the fellow and preceptor in order to accomplish a high level of teaching and productivity.

In addition to 14 shifts per month, fellows attend 1 day per month of didactic classroom teaching in the Simulation Center at CHRISTUS St. Michael. Classes are taught by program faculty members, and all content is based on the 12 month program curriculum. Fellows are given the full curriculum, textbooks, and other digital resources at the beginning of the program year. Fellows are encouraged immerse themselves in an attitude of learning, research, improvement, and engagement throughout the program year.

Fellows attend specialty workshops throughout the program year. Workshop topics include: Difficult Airway, High Risk Patient, Patient Experience Academy, Efficiency Academy, and other workshops as assigned by the program director.

Fellows gain experience in a wide variety of procedures, such as: Lumbar punctures, central lines, ultrasound, reductions, resuscitations, cardioversions, trauma management, and many others.
