Attendance at one class will be automatically scheduled for new patients with stroke in inpatient rehab, however patients and their families (including those in the acute care hospital and stroke survivors from our community) are encouraged to attend any and all classes. Each class will feature a quick introduction to what strokes are and why they occur, plus a rotating focus topic like healthy eating or caregiver resources.

Focus Topics for Stroke Class
Patients and family learn about the different types of problems that patients can have with communication. This can also include exercises and strategies that are helpful in addressing communication impairments.
Patients and family can learn about the cause and effect of the patient having trouble swallowing and the different strategies and interventions used by therapists to improve swallowing and reduce risk of aspiration.
CAREGIVERS AND COMMUNITY RESOURCES
Patients and family learn about the different roles that might need to be filled once the patient has returned home, like assistance with bathing or walking. Will provide community resources to help with transition home.
EMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL CHANGES
Patients and family learn about the different personality, behavioral, or emotional changes that may happen after a stroke. This includes education regarding coping mechanisms and support resources.
Patients and family learn about positive eating habits that can help prevent further complications in the future as well as help the body heal and recover. May include recipes or promotion of nutrition goal setting.
SEX, INTIMACY, & RELATIONSHIPS
Patients and family learn about how strokes may physically or emotionally impact a spousal or otherwise intimate relationship, as well as how to manage roles as both caregiver and spouse.
MOTOR AND SENSORY IMPAIRMENTS
Patients and family learn about the different tasks that are now difficult for the patient to perform because of altered motor control or sensation, as well as possible interventions or equipment used to improve function.
Patients and family learn about how strokes may affect bowel or bladder function and how incontinence can be managed acutely or long-term.
Patients and family learn about pharmacological or alternative therapies for helping manage primary or secondary pain that may occur due to stroke.
Patients and family learn about the effects that a stroke can have on balance and the methods that the therapy team uses to regain this function.
Patients and family learn about different types of visual problems that a stroke can cause, such as neglect towards a certain side. Families can also learn about strategies they can perform with patients day to day that can help correct or manage this.
Patients and family learn about different types of exercises that one may perform while in therapy and after returning home as well as the importance of developing and committing to exercise long-term.
Patients and family learn about the different types of equipment that a stroke survivor might need upon returning home. This can include devices that are used for walking, dressing and undressing, or feeding.
