“Trinity Mother Frances is currently certified by the Joint Commission as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center. We have partnered with Tyler Radiology Associates and Tyler Neurosurgical Associates to provide a vast array of much-needed services to patients in East Texas and the surrounding communities. Our facility offers all the stroke and neuro-related services available for a Comprehensive Stroke Center designation, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This includes a comprehensive team in place to care for all strokes, subarachnoid hemorrhages, aneurysms and many other neurovascular disorders,” said Cathy Newman MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Clinical Director of the Centers of Excellence at Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics.
The highly trained and specialized Stroke Team meets the patient at the Emergency Room door to ensure rapid, efficient care while promoting quality. This team comprises the Stroke Program Coordinator, Neurology-trained ICU nurses, Neuro-hospitalists, Neurologists, Neuro-interventional Radiologists, Neurosurgeons, Emergency Physicians, Nurses and support staff. Additionally, the Stroke Center of Excellence at Trinity Mother Frances provides leading edge imaging capabilities to stroke patients that encompass state of the art CT, MRI, Angiography and other technology that enables the Stroke Team to assess and treat patients rapidly, thus saving additional patient lives.
“Another crucial component of our Stroke Center of Excellence is the uncomplicated transfer agreements in place through our well regarded Trinity Mother Frances Transfer Center,” said Shawn Dunn, MD, Director of the Neuroscience Institute. “Many stroke patients arrive at Trinity Mother Frances from outside the Tyler community, and the sooner we can receive them and coordinate their care, the better it is for the patient. Our Transfer Center allows for seamless care between healthcare facilities in outlying areas and the care available at Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics. Patients are able to get the care they desperately need in a timely fashion, and our Transfer Center makes the process swift, consistent and uncomplicated.”
According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and one of the primary causes of adult disability in the U.S. In the treatment of stroke patients, time really is brain. A few minutes can mean the difference between a patient living independently or suffering debilitating disabilities. Every 40 seconds an American suffers a stroke; and every 4 minutes, an American dies from stroke-related effects. Studies show that when blood flow is restored to the brain in a timely fashion, 80 percent of patients are able to live independently 3 months later.
