CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Ross Breast Center Enters New Dimension in Mammography Care State-of-the-art Genius 3D® Mammography Exam & Hologic® 3D Mammography System Now Available to Patients of Northeast Texas December 8, 2017

Tyler, TX – The CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Ross Breast Center is now the first health care organization in Northeast Texas offering patients the Hologic® 3D Mammography System and the Genius® 3D Mammography Exam, giving providers the ability to detect up to 65-percent more invasive breast cancer.

“The CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Ross Breast Center has been repeatedly accredited as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR), and by adding 3D mammography to our services, we are taking another step forward in providing the very best care to our patients,” said Bobby McMillan MBA, RT [R][N], Administrative Director of Pulmonary and System Imaging at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System.

Conventional 2D mammograms provide doctors with a 2D image to evaluate the breast. This can be limiting due to overlapping layers of tissue, which can sometimes produce unclear results or false alarms. Genius exams deliver a series of detailed breast images, allowing physicians to better evaluate patients’ breasts layer by layer.

“Greater accuracy means better breast cancer detection and a reduced chance of being called back for additional breast imaging studies,” said John Larrinaga, M.D., Medical Director of the Ross Breast Center at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. “This technology will allow our physicians to view sharper, less-noisy images for improved visualization of fine calcifications. Yet all 3D mammography is not the same – this technology generates images with twice the tomosynthesis resolution of the standard 3D mammography exam. These higher resolution, improved contrast images mean more accurate diagnoses for our patients – and that can truly save lives.”

Studies show that the Genius 3D Mammography exam has greater accuracy than 2D mammography for women across a variety of ages and breast densities, and it is the only mammogram FDA-approved as superior for women with dense breasts.

“For many women, compression during mammograms can be uncomfortable. In fact, studies show a large number of women experienced discomfort and many were in pain during their last mammogram,” Laurie Ziegler, ARRT, (R)(M), CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Ross Breast Center Manager. “We want to offer the very best technology to diagnose and treat our patients to provide better, earlier breast cancer detection. This new Genius™ exam offers improved mammography scan times for 3D images, and can limit the time under compression to less than 4 seconds for 3D scans. Three-dimensional imaging is a wonderful addition to the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Ross Breast Center, and we will utilize this as a screening tool in conjunction with our other technologies such as 2D Digital Mammography, Ultrasound and MRI. And we always encourage patients to check with their provider to see which breast imaging modality is right for them.”

Initially, the Genius™ 3D Mammography Exam will be offered at the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Ross Breast Center location at the NorthPark Center on the campus of CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler, with plans to expand the technology to other locations, including the new Mobile Mammography Unit unveiled earlier this year.

“We always want to provide the very best care for our patients, and that motivation and drive truly exists throughout our System, and part of that desire is wanting to repay the trust and support of the Northeast Texas community,” added McMillan. “A portion of the funding to implement this technology was provided by the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Foundation and therefore by the generosity and spirit of this community, who believe in our efforts to improve the lives of our patients and this region. Our work on this project and many others across the region would simply not be possible without this community’s support.”

“Providing care of the highest quality and comfort available is a critical component of our ministry at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System,” said Steven Keuer, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System and President of CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic. “All of our physicians, providers, nursing staff and every member of our team give their all every day to ensure that our breast health patients receive care recognized nationally for its excellence in service and results. We will continue to fulfill our Mission to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ by seeking to continually improve the care at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System.”
