October 19, 2018
Tyler, TX – CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler has been recognized by Southwest Transplant Alliance with the Life Champion Partner GOLD Award for achieving outstanding organ transplant conversion and effectiveness rates over the past year.
“CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler received the GOLD Life Champion Partner Award for meeting or exceeding the two metrics that are measured by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that exemplify excellence in support for Organ Donation and Transplantation,” said Anne Willingham, Anne Willingham, MT(ASCP), CCTC, Hospital Services Coordinator for Southwest Transplant Alliance (STA) at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler.
The first metric is Conversion rate of at least 75-percent. The effective request rate is measured by dividing the number of effective approaches by the number of total approaches. An effective approach is one where the hospital gives the family an appropriate amount of time to process the death, and the hospital does not pre-mention donation and brain death testing is completed in an appropriate time frame.
The increase in rates is due to the implementation of a new system alert developed for nurses by the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System Informatics teams.
“Over the past year, we were able to significantly improve our compliance figures, which resulted in a conversion rate of 88-percent and an effective rate of 81-percent,” said Mike Breen Eckhard, MSN, RN-BC, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Informatics Officer, CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System. “By adding this alert into our Epic electronic health record system, we are able to save nurses in the ICU about 30 minutes when inputting information and making a referral to Southwest Transplant Alliance. Being able to give that time back to the ICU nurses allows for better care, and more successful transplants.”
CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler Nursing and Information Management have worked for the past year building tools within EPIC to improve the process for getting organ referral data to STA with the vendor iTransplant, and GOLD award recognizes the impact those efforts have made.
“As an organization we want to maximize the effectiveness of the donation process to make the biggest positive impact that we can, and the referral process is the biggest component of that,” said Shelly Welch, MBA, BSN, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer of CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler.
