American College of Cardiology - Cardiac Cath Lab PCI

Tyler, Texas – The American College of Cardiology has recognized the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital - Tyler for its demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients who come to a cardiac cath lab for care, including diagnostic catheterizations and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures.

The CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital - Tyler was awarded Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation with PCI in July 2019, based on rigorous onsite evaluation of the staff’s ability to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients who come to the cardiac cath lab with high quality outcomes.

“PCI, also known as percutaneous coronary intervention, is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure that opens narrowed or blocked coronary arteries with a balloon to relieve symptoms of heart disease or reduce heart damage during or after a heart attack,” explained Oscar Paniagua, MD. “Hospitals that perform PCIs frequently at a very high level make a tremendous impact on their communities – it is truly a lifesaving procedure.”

Hospitals that have proven exceptional competency in treating patients who require cardiac catheterization have standardized their assessment process for patients before undergoing catheterization to ensure quality and patient safety. They ensure that care in the procedure room for sedation, infection control, radiation safety, universal protocol, and time out procedures is fully coordinated; and have mastered the appropriate transfer to a cath recovery unit to better monitor and track complications, enhance physician-to-patient communication, patient family communication, discharge instructions and follow-up information.

“CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital - Tyler has demonstrated its commitment to providing Tyler and Northeast Texas with excellent heart care,” said Phillip D. Levy, MD, FACC, chair of the ACC Accreditation Management Board. “ACC Accreditation Services is proud to award CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital - Tyler with Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation with PCI.”

Hospitals receiving Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation with PCI from the ACC must take part in a multifaceted clinical process that involves completing a gap analysis; examining variances of care; developing an action plan; a rigorous onsite review; and monitoring for sustained success. Improved methods and strategies of caring for patients include streamlining processes, implementing guidelines and standards, and adopting best practices in the care of cath lab patients. Facilities that achieve accreditation meet or exceed an array of stringent criteria and have organized a team of doctors, nurses, clinicians, and other administrative staff that earnestly support the efforts leading to improved patient outcomes.

“Our cath lab team is committed to serving our mission of extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ and are on a continued journey of excellence for our patients. This accreditation is made possible by every one of our Associates and team members giving maximum effort to living our mission,” said Deb Chelette, RN, BSN, MHA, Vice President of the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital - Tyler and Cardiovascular Services for CHRISTUS Health in Northeast Texas. “This facility and our team provide exceptional care to our cath lab patients, and they do all they can to demonstrate their expertise and unrivaled commitment to their patients every single day.”

In 2018, CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital - Tyler was also recognized as the first ever recipient of the HeartCARE Center: National Distinction of Excellence from the ACC based on a demonstrated commitment to comprehensive, high-quality culture and cardiovascular care through accreditations and ongoing registry reporting.

“The ACC represents the highest goals of clinical excellence, continuing education and constant improvement in heart care,” said C. Fagg Sanford, M.D., Chair of the Cardiovascular Institute at the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital - Tyler. “First, with our first-in the-world recognition and again with this accreditation for our cath lab, we have again shown our patients, this community and the health care world that CHRISTUS Health and the CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System is leading the way in heart care.”
