Board certified in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Smolarz has practiced in Texarkana since 1986. He is a graduate of Austin College, Sherman, TX, where he majored in biology and received his MS in zoology/botany from East Texas University, Commerce. He earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch – Galveston, TX, and completed his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at L.S.U. Medical Center, Shreveport, LA. He also holds a master’s in health administration from University of Texas-Southwestern Medical School, Dallas.
Medical Director of the CHRISTUS St. Michael Center for Joint Replacement, Dr. Smolarz will be the Texarkana area’s first orthopedic surgeon to perform robot-assisted surgery for total knee replacement. CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System is the first hospital in the Texarkana area to provide the latest technology for total knee replacement via Stryker’s Mako Robotic Arm-assisted technology.
With over 30 years of experience as an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Smolarz embraces evidence-based medicine as the guide for adopting new surgical techniques and technology for his patients. He has performed robotic-arm assisted surgery for partial knee replacements for several years and is now providing total knee replacement surgery, also using the robotic arm.
“I like to adopt new and proven procedures for my patients such as total knee replacement using the robotic arm because of the benefits provided,” he said. “I am excited about the opportunity for my patients to obtain improved function, less pain, and better quality of life. Ultimately, whether a patient has experienced joint issues or has suffered from injuries or illness impacting the skeletal system, my goal is to work with them to reach the best possible outcome.”
