The Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth
We welcome with joy a third sponsoring congregation to CHRISTUS Health, the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Our two founding sponsoring congregations, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word of Houston and San Antonio, embrace this new addition as each congregation’s focus is extraordinarily complementary to one another.
Known as the true originators of our story, the Sisters of the Incarnate Word of Houston and San Antonio built the very foundation CHRISTUS Health stands on. Their dedication and courage to accept an invitation from Bishop Claude Dubuis, founder of the congregations, to “extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ” lives on through our mission, vision, and core values. From establishing some of the first facilities that make up our hospital system to overcoming tragedy in order to continue to help those in need, the Sisters made remarkable strides well ahead of their time. Today, their ministries encompass communities in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Utah, California, and throughout the world. Many of them focus on health, education, and social justice.
Like the Sisters of the Incarnate Word of Houston and San Antonio, the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth also answered God’s call from Europe in the 19th century. Their founder, Frances Siedliska, set out for Chicago in 1885 joined by 11 sisters. They quickly set to work at two schools and an orphanage. Their ministry grew throughout the Midwest and then beyond. In the U.S., their congregation now includes 270 sisters in Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Texas, Michigan and Ohio. In 1937, 16 Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth came to Tyler, Texas from the Sacred Heart Province in Chicago to open Mother Frances Hospital on March 19. But the opening day dedication that was planned never happened. The hospital was called on to open one day early to care for victims of the catastrophic new London school explosion in nearby Rusk County. That one hospital grew into Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics, which recently joined CHRISTUS Health and is now CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health system. CHRISTUS welcomed a new sponsor and new additions to our ministry all in one day! (For instructions as to how to translate these videos into Spanish, please scroll down to the bottom of this page).
At the heart of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth’s charism is a focus on enriching families. A charism is a gift, characteristic or quality that is given by God to an individual or group for the good of others. The Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth’s focus is extraordinarily complementary to the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word as they work to promote human dignity and make the love of God a real and tangible presence in the world. The Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth are committed to creating communities of love and hope which foster and celebrate the oneness of the human family.
The joining of these three congregations presents a tremendous opportunity to CHRISTUS Health Associates to work in new and collaborative ways. All three congregations have areas of ministry worldwide, which further supports the international nature of CHRISTUS Health’s mission to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.
