CHRISTUS Ochsner Health Brings Innovative New Bariatric Center To SWLA

June 28, 2022

Lake Charles, Louisiana – Two expert surgeons are raising the bar for weight loss surgery in Southwest Louisiana. As the region’s leader in innovation, CHRISTUS Ochsner Health Southwestern Louisiana brings together the knowledge and skill of Jerome Schrapps, M.D. and Matias Nauts, D.O.

Patients seeking surgical treatment for morbid obesity and related conditions now have a premiere choice for receiving care through the CHRISTUS Ochsner Bariatric Center.

“We are bringing two of the region’s best surgeons together to provide the exceptional care through the center. This duo has a proven track record and is committed to helping our bariatric patients take control of their health and their lives,” said Jim Davidson, President and Chief Operating Officer, CHRISTUS Ochsner Health Southwestern Louisiana.

Dr. Schrapps has performed more than 2,500 procedures and has more than 15 years of experience as a bariatric surgeon. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in General and Laparoscopic Surgery and serves as Medical Director of the CHRISTUS Southeast Texas Bariatric Center in Beaumont, Texas.

“I am excited to be a part of this team. I am dedicated to helping patients live happier, longer and healthier lives by offering resolution through weight loss surgery,” said Dr. Schrapps. “Obesity increases risks of morbidity and mortality because of the diseases and conditions commonly associated with it, such as type II diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Bariatric surgery continues to be an effective form of treatment for drastically improving these conditions.”

Dr. Nauts rounds out this dynamic team. He brings 7 years of experience serving patients right here in Southwest Louisiana. With more than 1,500 robotic procedures under his belt, Dr. Nauts is often called on to train surgeons throughout the region on performing surgery using robotic devices.

“Robotic technologies have revolutionized traditional surgery and are becoming more common in weight loss surgery procedures,” said Dr. Nauts. “Robotic surgery only requires a series of small incisions which means less blood loss, less scarring and a quicker recovery.”
