From sunburns to sudden storms: CHRISTUS Health urges preparedness

With summer in full swing, CHRISTUS Ochsner Southwestern Louisiana is reminding residents to stay alert and prepare for high heat, severe storms and flash floods as they continue to impact the region.

“This time of year, our area can go from blue skies to a flash flood warning in the blink of an eye,” said Renee Bearden, emergency preparedness manager for CHRISTUS Ochsner Southwestern Louisiana. “Being prepared before a crisis hits can make all the difference.”

Bearden said flash flooding is especially dangerous in low-lying areas and can happen with little warning. She stressed the importance of avoiding flooded roads, even if they appear passable.

“People tend to underestimate moving water,” she said. “It only takes a few inches to knock someone off balance, and just one foot of water to carry away a vehicle. The best thing you can do is remember ‘Turn around, don’t drown’.”

Bearden emphasized staying hydrated throughout the day and scheduling outdoor activities during the cooler early mornings or late evening hours when temperatures are lower.

“If you stop sweating and your skin feels dry and hot, that’s a serious sign you may be heading toward heat stroke,” she said. “Get to a cool area immediately and seek medical help if needed.”

Bearden recommended that every household have an emergency kit ready in case of power outages, sudden evacuations or shelter-in-place scenarios caused by flooding or severe storms.

Suggested supplies include:

  • Prescription medications
  • NOAA weather radio
  • Bottled water
  • Flashlights
  • Extra batteries
  • First-aid kit

“Talk through emergency plans with your family,” Bearden said. “Even young children should know what to do and where to go. When you have a plan, you’re much more likely to stay safe during a crisis.”
