Meet Maria Palafox, MD
Dr. Maria Palafox is a tenured, board-certified general surgeon with specialized training in advanced endoscopic and laparoscopic techniques. Her expertise spans extensive experience in breast cancer surgery and proficiency in the latest advancements in genetic testing. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, she completed her general surgery residency, followed by a post-residency fellowship in critical care.
With a profound interest in surgical care for breast diseases, Dr. Palafox focuses on providing comprehensive treatment to breast cancer patients, including genetic counseling for hereditary breast cancer syndromes. She is dedicated to advancing breast cancer treatment and was the first breast surgeon in the U.S. selected to use CancerGene Connect, a pioneering patient-driven data collection platform adopted by Invitae for genetic testing programs.
Dr. Palafox served as the liaison for the Committee on Cancer to the American College of Surgeons at Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas, crucial to achieving NAPBC certification. She trained under Dr. Dixie Melillo, a respected figure in Southeast Texas breast cancer care and founder of The Rose. Formerly Chief of Breast and General Surgery within the Tenet hospital network, Dr. Palafox is among the few surgeons in South Texas certified in Hidden Scar™ techniques. She also played a pivotal role as the principal site investigator for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s Young and Strong study, collaborating with 25 other sites nationwide.

All of the staff, nurses and doctors are always very friendly and professional. However, what aggravates me the most is the time I have to wait in the waiting room to be seen. I do not like the fact that the clinics are required to book more than one patient in an appointment. It's as if they don't think that their patients might have a life other than sitting in a waiting room for over an hour to be seen. Sometimes patients may have another appointment with another doctor or they have someone waiting with them. It is very inconsiderate and rude. It's like being held hostage because they know this is our doctor and our only option is to wait.
