Born in McAllen, Texas and raised in San Antonio, Dr. Vela grew up playing multiple sports in the San Antonio area. Since he was ten-years-old, Dr. Vela's dream was to get a good education and be a family physician. He attended a diverse group of excellent universities from 1969 to 1985 including The United States Military Academy at West Point, University of Texas at Austin, University of Texas at San Antonio, Creighton University, and University of Iowa College of Medicine. Besides practicing family medicine, two of his favorite medical experiences include medical director of a chemical dependency unit for Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa and being a member of a physician advisory group to two Secretaries of Health over a four year period (Sec. Donna Shalala and Sec. Tommy Thompson).
Dr. Vela's personal interests include sports, basketball, gardening, history, current affairs and his dogs. He has been married for more than 23 years and has two amazing sons.
