CHRISTUS Health surgeon becomes the patient for hernia repair in Beaumont

A CHRISTUS Health surgeon spent years studying to become a physician, not knowing he would one day undergo the very procedure he does every day.
Dr. Kevin Dean, general surgeon at CHRISTUS Southeast Texas – St. Elizabeth, has spent years treating patients with hernias. Recently, he found himself on the other side of the operating table with a hernia of his own.
June is National Hernia Awareness Month, and Dean wants his own situation to be a helpful reminder that hernias can affect anyone, even the doctors who treat them.
A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the body’s muscular or tissue wall. There are several types of hernias that can affect the groin, belly button, abdominal wall and diaphragm.
“As a surgeon, I know the signs, and I knew right away what I was dealing with,” he said. “I’ve diagnosed and repaired hernias countless times, but it’s different when it’s your own body.”
Dean said he did not hesitate to ask fellow surgeon, Dr. Iumy Torres to perform his procedure.
More than 5 million Americans suffer from hernias, but only about 15% seek treatment, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.
“Hernias can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender or fitness level,” Torres said. “Oftentimes, patients will notice a bulge or lump, particularly in the abdominal area.”
Torres said risk factors for developing a hernia include obesity, smoking, aging and physical strain.
She said if patients experience a hernia and need surgical intervention, CHRISTUS Southeast Texas – St. Elizabeth offers a minimally invasive hernia repair using the hospital’s state-of-the-art da Vinci 5 robotic system. The robotic procedure reduces pain and speeds up recovery compared to traditional surgery.
“Hernias don’t resolve on their own, and they only put patients at greater risk if ignored,” Torres said. “While not all hernias require surgery, it’s important to get evaluated by your physician. If you’re experiencing symptoms, contact your primary care provider.”
Dean said he is grateful to undergo a swift procedure allowing him to get back to work to help others in need.
“I had complete confidence in Dr. Torres,” he said. “She’s an outstanding surgeon, and I trusted her to get me back on my feet. She did just that.”
