Hip Pain Does Not Have To Get You Down

Learn More About Your Hips

The hip is a ball and socket joint. The ball portion of the joint is called the femoral head, and is part of the upper leg bone (femur). The socket portion is called the acetabulum, and is part of the pelvic bone. The femoral head (ball) fits into the acetabulum (socket) and moves within its natural fluid, called synovial fluid, which helps to lubricate the joint during motion.

In a healthy hip joint, the surface of the bones where the ball and socket rub together are very smooth and covered with a tough protective tissue called cartilage.

Services

Arthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of hip arthritis. It is a slow deterioration of the cartilage that covers your hip’s ball and socket bone. Pain is generally focused in the hip, groin, back or thigh areas. As this condition worsens, a variety of everyday physical activities can become very difficult.

Bursitis

Hip bursitis involves the bursa in your hip becoming inflamed. Your bursa is a liquid-filled sac that acts as a barrier between your hip bone and tendon. Your tendon is made up of a cord of very strong tissue that brings your muscle and bone together.

Dislocation

A dislocated hip occurs when your femur is displaced from your hip socket. This condition is usually brought about as a result of great force which would normally cause a traumatic injury (a car accident or a bad fall).

Fracture

A fracture is a broken bone. It is a condition that can happen to an individual after experiencing a traumatic, painful injury. When a bone is fractured, the shape of the bone is manipulated by the break. Fractures can happen straight across the bone affected or alongside the actual length of it.

Hip Replacement

In total hip replacement surgery, the ball and socket of your hip are removed and replaced with artificial implants generally made of metal and a durable plastic material. If you are receiving a hip resurfacing procedure as an alternative to total hip replacement, the process works a bit differently. If you are preparing to have your hip resurfaced, the process is similar to a total hip replacement, however, instead of cutting off the top of the thighbone, the head is manipulated with a metal mushroom-like cap.
