Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to create a smoother, firmer, and more toned abdominal profile. It involves tightening the supportive muscles of the abdominal wall and removing excess skin and fat. This procedure is often chosen after significant weight loss, pregnancy, or other changes that have stretched the abdominal tissues.
A flat, well-contoured abdomen is a goal many pursue through diet and exercise. However, pregnancy, prior surgery, weight fluctuations, aging, and genetics can lead to sagging skin, stretched muscles, or stubborn fat that do not respond to lifestyle changes. Abdominoplasty can reverse these changes, helping restore confidence and comfort in your body.
Tummy Tuck or Liposuction?
Liposuction is ideal for patients with localized fat deposits and good skin elasticity, but who do not have significant skin excess or abdominal muscle laxity. A tummy tuck is better suited for those with stretched skin, loose abdominal muscles, or both. In some cases, these procedures can be performed together for enhanced results.
Who Is a Candidate?
- Good overall health and stable weight
- Excess abdominal skin or loose muscles after weight loss or pregnancy
- Realistic expectations for surgical outcomes
- Non-smoker or willing to stop before and after surgery
- Not planning future pregnancies or significant weight changes
The Consultation
During your consultation, we will review your medical history, medications, and lifestyle. Your abdomen will be examined to assess skin quality, muscle tone, and fat distribution. We will discuss your goals, outline your options, and review potential risks and expected outcomes.
The Procedure
Tummy tuck surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. The most common approach includes:
- A horizontal incision between the pubic area and belly button, tailored to your needs
- Repair and tightening of the abdominal muscles
- Removal of excess skin and fat
- Creation of a new opening for the belly button in its natural position
An abdominal support garment is applied after surgery. Drains may be placed to remove excess fluid and are typically removed within a week. Most patients return to work in about two weeks, resume light exercise in 4–6 weeks, and see swelling gradually resolve over several months.
Types of Abdominoplasty
- Full Tummy Tuck: Addresses the entire abdomen, from the pubic area to the ribcage.
- Mini Tummy Tuck: Targets the lower abdomen below the belly button with a shorter incision.
- Extended Tummy Tuck: Extends around the hips to address excess skin and fat on the flanks.
Combining Procedures
Tummy tucks are often combined with other surgeries for comprehensive results, such as:
- Mommy Makeover: Tummy tuck with breast lift, augmentation, or both
- Body Contouring: Liposuction, arm lift, or thigh lift performed alongside abdominoplasty
