Vascular Interventional Imaging
The fastest growing section of the radiology department is vascular and interventional radiology. This field includes a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using minimally invasive techniques. Vascular Interventional Radiology (VIR) is a minimally invasive procedure that is guided by imaging technology (CT, fluoroscopy, ultrasound). Some of these procedures are done to diagnose illness or for treatment purposes.
Commonly performed procedures include:
- Cerebral and peripheral angiography
- Arterial and venous balloon angioplasty
- Vascular stent placement
- Diagnosis and treatment of urinary obstruction
- Drainage of abscesses
While many of these conditions previously required surgery, most can now be treated on an outpatient basis.
