Cervical cancer is caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), a very common sexually transmitted virus. Cervical cancer is much less common now than in past decades, largely due to the ability to prevent cancers with Pap smears. This is expected to decrease even further in women vaccinated against HPV. However, although both vaccines and Pap smears are highly effective, neither are 100% effective.

Uterine cancer is very common in older women. It is heavily associated with obesity and the use of estrogen, tamoxifen and some other hormones. The majority of uterine cancers present at an early stage with abnormal bleeding, so they can be treated at an early stage.
