SLEW - Cancer Wellness Center
The Support Lending for Emotional Well-Being organization (or SLEW), is an organization helping uninsured, underinsured and low-income women undergoing treatment for, or are survivors of, cancer. They are "the only agency of its kind in Bexar County and operates as an integrative cancer care prevention and survivorship agency." With a combination of paid staff and volunteers, SLEW provides services to thousands of women per year. Programs and services include counseling, monthly cooking demonstrations, exercise classes, lymphatic drainage therapy, mastectomy bra and prosthetic fittings, patient navigation, case management as well as emergency food and utility assistance. SLEW described one of their desired outcomes from their programs: "Survivors will be able to return to society experiencing a sense of well-being, self-confidence, and self-sufficiency."
With support from CHRISTUS Fund, SLEW was able to expand their services to serve over 600 women.
Below are a few stories from women that benefit from SLEW's amazing services!
