Understanding your care options

For some women, a routine mammogram is all that's needed. For others, additional testing may be recommended to better understand an area of concern. No matter where you are in the process, our team is here to provide personalized care and expert guidance.

Step 1: Annual screening mammogram

A screening mammogram is often the first step in detecting changes in breast tissue before symptoms develop. Regular mammograms can help identify breast cancer at an earlier stage, when treatment is often more effective and less invasive.

During a screening mammogram, images are taken of each breast and reviewed by radiologists specially trained in breast imaging.

Possible results may include:

  • No concerning findings and a return to routine annual screening
  • A recommendation for additional imaging to take a closer look at an area of the breast
  • Identification of findings that may require further evaluation

Step 2: Diagnostic mammogram and additional breast imaging

After a screening mammogram, some women may be asked to return for a diagnostic mammogram, which provides additional views of a specific area of the breast. Depending on those results, your provider may also recommend an ultrasound or breast MRI.

These tests help your care team get a clearer picture of an area of concern and determine whether additional evaluation is necessary. Many findings turn out to be noncancerous conditions, such as cysts or other benign breast changes.

Step 3: Breast biopsy

If imaging results show an area that requires closer examination, your provider may recommend a breast biopsy. A biopsy removes a small sample of tissue so it can be examined by a pathologist.

Depending on your situation, a biopsy may include:

  • Fine needle aspiration
  • Core needle biopsy
  • Surgical biopsy

Most biopsies are outpatient procedures that allow you to return home the same day. Biopsy results provide the information needed to determine whether the tissue is benign or cancerous and help guide any next steps in care.

Step 4: Personalized treatment planning

If breast cancer is diagnosed, you won't face it alone. Your care team will work together to develop a treatment plan based on your diagnosis, overall health and personal goals.

Depending on your needs, your treatment plan may include:

Our multidisciplinary team collaborates to coordinate care and help you understand your options, empowering you to make informed decisions about your treatment.

What if my results are normal?

Most mammograms do not result in a cancer diagnosis. If your screening results are normal, your provider will recommend when to return for routine screening based on your age, risk factors and health history.

Regular screening remains one of the most important steps you can take to protect your breast health.
