The Heart Center at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is focused on the complex care of children with congenital and acquired heart disease. We evaluate children prior to birth via fetal echocardiography, neonates who are born with congenital cardiac abnormalities, as well as patients who have a known history of congenital heart disease.
Adult Congenital Heart Services
We provide a high level of care for adolescents and adults with congenital heart disease. Our expert team of cardiologists works to ensure that patients with heart problems transitioning into or already in adulthood receive support and resources for long-term management and improved quality of life. We offer treatment options including valve repair or replacement, pulmonary hypertension therapies, and medications to control symptoms. as well as the most advanced procedures including the Melody Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve and Bi-ventricular Pacing.
We offer non-invasive cardiac imaging including echocardiography and cardiac MRI services for fetal, pediatric, and adult patients with congenital or acquired heart problems. We provide transthoracic, transesophageal, stress, and fetal echo support. Our team of sonographers is specialty trained in pediatric sonography. In an effort to meet the unique needs of children, and provide comfort during cardiac imaging, anesthesia is available.
Patients with cardiac disease and defects potentially have an underlying genetic condition. Understanding of the genetic linkage has the potential to facilitate identification of associated anomalies or risks, customized management and counseling regarding recurrence risk. Physicians with the Heart Center and Genetics Clinic work together to provide comprehensive care as well as genetic testing.
Electrophysiology services at The Children's Hospital of San Antonio offers a full complement of diagnostic and therapeutic options to evaluate and manage any heart rhythm abnormalities. The diagnostic testing includes electrocardiograms, Holter monitors, event monitors, exercise stress tests, upright tilt table tests, genetic tests, implanted loop recorders, noninvasive programmed stimulation and pharmacological challenge studies. Therapeutic options include medications, invasive electrophysiology studies with ablation (fluoroscopy free), device therapy inclusive of pacemakers or defibrillator implantation.
We provide comprehensive fetal cardiac care to expecting families when there may be a risk of heart disease in the fetus including diagnosis, counseling, delivery planning, and postnatal care. We provide skilled fetal echocardiography from 18-32 weeks gestation, emphasizing evidence-based and informed counseling of families whose fetus has a congenital heart defect.
General Pediatric Cardiology
At The Heart Center, our experienced team of pediatric cardiologists and additional care team members treat patients from before birth to adulthood with congenital or complex heart problems. Dedicated to providing the highest level of heart care in a patient- and family-centered setting, we strive to achieve outstanding results for the patient and family. These services include consulting and helping manage patients with heart murmurs, chest pain, palpitations, syncope, a family history of heart conditions, Kawasaki disease, high blood pressures, and preventive cardiology.
We offer diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization for infants, children, adolescents and adults with congenital heart defects. The interventional procedures include opening heart valves which are partially or completely closed, closing/opening abnormal blood vessels and connections in the heart, arteries and veins, or closing/creating holes in the heart. Some heart problems that previously required open heart surgery can now be fixed in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab. This provides a non-surgical and minimally-invasive way to diagnose and treat heart conditions.
